St Joseph Burb (from Lumen Vincens)
The most chaste and valiant saint, second only to Mary. Some of his titles include: guardian of virgins, light of patriarchs, watchful defender of Christ, lover of poverty, pillar of home life, patron of the sick, terror of demons, and protector of Holy Mother Church. Yet how often do we turn to this glorious saint? If you haven’t guessed it by now let me tell you I am speaking of glorious Saint Joseph. How many of us know prayers to other saints (like Saint Michael’s, or Saint Thomas’ prayer for students), or the numerous prayers to Mary?
Please don’t misunderstand me, Mary is the highest and rightfully deserves that place; but what about her husband? Would she want her loved one to be forgotten? The Church has declared many encyclicals on Saint Joseph (Quamquam Pluries, on the devotion to Saint Joseph or Redemptoris Custos by JPII ), stating that in the litany Saint Joseph is suppose to come after Mary and the Trinity. In a world that has lost the knowledge of what it is to be a man, shouldn’t we be seeking him even more then ever? Isidore of Isonlanis, a Dominican of the 16th century prophesied that “the sound of vitory” will be heard by the Church Militant “when the faithful recognize the sacnctity of St. Joseph. The Lord will let His light shine, He will lift the veil, and great men will search out the interior gifts of God that are hidden in St. Joseph; they will find in him a priceless treasure, the like of which they never found in other saints of the old Testament.” Even the most famous of Saints and holy people implore you to seek this great man, among them being: St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Pius X, St. Liguori, St. Gertrude, Pope Leo XIII, Venerable Martin von Cochem, and many others.
Even our Lady asks us to seek her husband in her words to Venerable Mary of Agreda “In all trials seek his intercession, because the Heavenly Father will grant whatever my spouse asks.” And at Fatima she spoke of him again saying “In October Our Lord will come, as well as Our Lady of Dolors and Our Lady of Carmel. St Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world…” She even gives us a glimpse into him personally when she talks with St. Bridget of Sweden. “St. Joseph was so reserved and careful in his speech that not one word ever issued from his mouth that was not good or holy, nor did he ever indulge in unnecessary or less then charitable conversation…”
So now that you know, what will you do? Will you continue to go along, forgetting Saint Joseph when you are struggling or need help; because to forget this holy man is like forgetting the Holy Spirit in the Trinity? He is the closest human to know Mary, living day to day with two perfectly holy beings. He taught Jesus how to be a man; he cared for him, protecting him not only from King Herod, but also from the evil one who must have tried everything to kill Jesus before he could save us. Many call Mary momma, and she is our mother; does that not also make Joseph our father? Papa Joseph, can help us as well, protecting us from harm, and teaching us as a father teaches his children. You have but to go to him, so I say Ite Ad Joseph.
