The Creed of the Apprentices
by John Scancella
Love, loyalty, and service, the three building blocks of our household. Through these virtues we are bound together and by these virtues we are made brothers. Ite Ad Joseph it has been said, for Jesus, through Mary, by his example. Who better do we know, then the man who taught Jesus to be a man? St. Joseph, the just man, defender of mother church, terror of demons, and protector of virgins, protector of THE VIRGIN MARY, the one who bore God into this world. He protected her with his love, his mercy, his guidance, and his charity all the days of his life. He is a man among men. No other can be as he, but yet he is ready and willing to teach us how for those who are ready. He is humble, so humble as to take the seat of the servant, yet he who sits at the low seat will be invited by his master to a higher seat of recognition. On that day, when St. Joseph is recognized for everything that he encompasses, St. Joseph, the foster father of Christ, will teach us, as our foster father. On that day, we shall all become true apprentices, signed to him to learn the way. That way is, to follow Christ to Holiness. Like a carpenter shapes wood to fit the joint, so we ask him to shape us to fit God’s eternal will. With careful eye and skilled hands he will carve us into a beautiful sculpture fit for God’s presence. O St. Joseph, the highest saint, bring us, your loyal boys that we may learn, to become your humble and beloved men. St. Joseph, our foster father, watch over all of the apprentices, and show us the way to Christ. Leave us not to wander alone, but strengthen us, and guide us in all things, to God our Father.
St. Joseph, patron of the apprentices, Pray for us.
